Asthmatic breath sounds are characterized by expiratory wheezing or abnormal breath sounds on expiration.
Rationale: expiratory phase abnormal breath sounds are caused by narrowing of the lower airways i.e., bronchi. Usually from asthma. Expiratory Wheezing commonly heard in asthma which sounds like a high pitched whistle due to narrowed lower airways, commonly heard in conditions such as Asthma & COPD.
Inspiratory stridor or loud high pitched abnormal breath sounds heard on inspiration during a laryngospasm is from partial upper airway obstruction. In Laryngospasms the vocal cords are narrowing or closing thus causing abnormal inspiratory breath sounds commonly called stridor of the upper airway, which limits air entering the lungs.
